"A circle of torches lit that deep abyss, the circular hole, the throat, andmoat of the gigantic cavern. The torch flames trembled, the oil-soaked strawbundles crackled and twisted with heat, in a desperate effort to produce as muchfire as possible. Futile effort. The darkness of the pit always prevailed. It wasimpossible to locate the bottom.
